It’s the Fourth of July. A hot dog steps up to the plate. A peanut winds up on the mound. The crowd — a stadium packed with popcorn, burgers, and watermelons — goes wild. That’s Google Doodle Baseball, the beloved 2019 Independence Day game that turned America’s favourite pastime into a one-click backyard classic.
You get three strikes. Score as many runs as you can before you’re out. Time your swing against six different pitch types and walk away with a collector’s baseball card of your food team at the end of every game. No download, no sign-up. Click or tap and play.

The Story Behind the Doodle
Google published this Doodle on July 4, 2019 to celebrate U.S. Independence Day. The concept was simple and perfectly American — a backyard BBQ baseball game where classic summertime snacks step up to the plate for a chance to hit it out of the park.
Instead of professional players, Google designed an entire roster of food characters: hot dogs, pizza slices, corn cobs, ice cream, watermelon, ketchup, and more — each with their own name and personality. Your opponents? A team of peanuts, doing everything they can to strike you out. The stadium crowd? More food, cheering from the stands. Hit a home run and the fireworks go off in red, white, and blue. It’s one of the most charming and playful Google Doodles ever made.

How to Play Doodle Baseball
When the game starts, your first food character steps up to the home plate. A peanut pitcher stands on the mound and throws the ball. Your job: click, tap, or press spacebar at the right moment to swing the bat.
Hit the ball and your batter automatically runs the bases. Get them all the way around all four bases — first, second, third, and home — and you score a run. Blast it completely out of the park and you get a home run instantly, triggering Independence Day fireworks in red, white, and blue.
Miss the ball and that’s a strike. Miss three times and the game ends. No second chances, no extra lives — just your final run total, and then a baseball card revealing which food teammate you were playing as.

Controls
| Action | Desktop | Mobile / Tablet |
|---|---|---|
| Swing the bat | Left Click or Spacebar | Tap anywhere on screen |
| Start game | Click or tap the bat icon to begin | |
That’s the entire control scheme. One button, one action. All the skill in Doodle Baseball comes down to timing — there’s no way to aim, no power meter, no direction control. Watch the ball, swing when it reaches the plate.
Scoring — How Runs Work
| Result | What Happens | Runs Scored |
|---|---|---|
| Single / Double / Triple | Ball lands in play, batter advances 1, 2, or 3 bases | 1 run per batter completing the circuit |
| Home Run | Ball flies out of the park — fireworks, crowd roars | Automatic run + all players on base score |
| Strike | Missed swing — ball passes the plate | 0 runs, one strike added |
| Three Strikes | Game over — final score displayed, baseball card awarded | Game ends |
The Pitch Types — Know Your Peanut Pitcher
This is where the game gets genuinely interesting. The peanut pitcher doesn’t just throw one type of pitch. As you score more runs, the pitcher rotates through six different pitch styles — each one indicated by the colour of their hat. Learn what each colour means and you’ll always know what’s coming.

| Hat Colour | Pitch Type | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| ⚪ White | Straight pitch — comes in flat and predictable | Easiest |
| 🔵 Blue | Rising arc — ball curves upward before reaching the plate | Easy |
| 🟢 Green | Spiral spin — ball swirls as it travels toward you | Medium |
| 🟡 Yellow | Zigzag — ball moves side to side unpredictably | Hard |
| 🟣 Purple | Disappearing ball — vanishes mid-flight and reappears | Very Hard |
| 🔴 Red | Fastball — maximum speed, barely time to react | Hardest |
The pitcher starts on easier colours and works toward the harder ones as your score climbs. When you see the hat colour change, adjust your timing before the ball is released — not after. By the time a purple or red pitch arrives, you have almost no margin for error.
Meet the Team — Your Food Roster
Each at-bat puts a different food character at the plate. Win or lose, the game ends by revealing a baseball card of one of your teammates — complete with their name and personality. Your full roster includes:
| Character Name | Food |
|---|---|
| H-Dog | Hot Dog |
| Wild Slice | Pizza |
| The Cobbra | Corn on the Cob |
| Sluggin’ Sirloin | Steak |
| 2 Scoops | Ice Cream |
| The Sauce | Ketchup |
| Big Red | Watermelon |
| Will Power Pop | Soda |
The card you receive at the end is random — so even if you play the same score twice, you might meet a different teammate. Collecting all eight is part of the fun.

Tips to Score More Runs
- Check the hat colour before the pitch is thrown. The pitcher’s hat tells you what’s coming. If you see purple or red, mentally prepare for a tough one before the wind-up even starts.
- Don’t swing early. The single biggest mistake new players make is swinging as soon as the ball appears. Wait until it’s close to the plate — especially on slower pitches where the ball drifts.
- On zigzag and spiral pitches, aim for the middle timing. You can’t predict exactly where the ball will land on yellow or green pitches. Swinging at the ball’s midpoint — not the start or end of its movement — gives you the best contact rate.
- Don’t panic on the purple disappearing ball. The ball reappears. Wait for it to come back into view before swinging rather than guessing where it’ll be.
- Red fastball: swing slightly early. The ball is moving fastest of all six pitch types. Compared to normal timing, you need to commit fractionally sooner to make contact.
- Focus on making contact, not hitting home runs. Singles and doubles that advance runners score runs too. A consistent string of hits beats wild swings that result in strikes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Doodle Baseball?
Doodle Baseball is an interactive Google Doodle released on July 4, 2019 to celebrate U.S. Independence Day. It’s a baseball game featuring food-themed characters — hot dogs, pizza, ice cream, watermelon and more — batting against a team of peanut pitchers. The goal is to score as many runs as possible before getting three strikes.
How do you swing in Doodle Baseball?
Click the left mouse button, press the spacebar, or tap the screen on mobile. One input, one swing. Timing is everything — there’s no direction control or power meter, just whether you connect with the pitch or not.
What do the peanut pitcher’s hat colours mean?
Each colour signals a different pitch type. White = straight (easiest), Blue = rising arc, Green = spiral spin, Yellow = zigzag, Purple = disappearing ball, Red = fastest fastball (hardest). The harder pitches appear as your score increases.
How do you score a home run?
Hit the ball completely out of the park. It scores an automatic run for every player on base plus the batter, and triggers red, white, and blue Independence Day fireworks. Home runs are the fastest way to build a high score.
How many strikes before the game ends?
Three. Miss three pitches — in any combination across your at-bats — and the game ends immediately, displaying your final run total and a baseball card of one of your food teammates.
What is the baseball card at the end?
After every game, you receive a randomly chosen baseball card featuring one member of your food team — H-Dog, Wild Slice, The Cobbra, Sluggin’ Sirloin, 2 Scoops, The Sauce, Big Red, or Will Power Pop — with their name and description. The card is random, so different games reveal different teammates.
Can I play on mobile?
Yes. Tap anywhere on the screen to swing. The game works on mobile browsers without any app download required.
Is there a time limit?
No. The game has no timer. It ends only when you collect three strikes. Take your time on each pitch — there’s no rush.
